Sometimes we are tired of not having the answers, and honestly, that is still the case in some part of my life. So, I have embarked on this journey of writing down my story. What are the things I want right now? The things I want three, five or ten years from now? This piece is about how to write a story.

I have to admit that I didn’t have a struggling childhood but I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth either! I had to push myself to be the first in many things within my family. My parents certainly didn’t have the chance to attend college which they have dreamed of; however, they were at a point where it was best to push us to do what they once couldn’t do. For that, I could not disappoint them.  When I started taking ESOL classes in college (a.k.a learning English), my major was Pre-med and shortly after ESOL, I got to take normal prerequisite courses. I had a close relative at that time that kept telling me that people who were born here in the USA; couldn’t even pass anatomy classes, let alone me having English as a third language. I was unbothered…

One time, I told my mom that would change my major to Pre-Nursing because I was paying over $300 per credit at a community college; that’s over 5k a semester with no scholarship. She replied; “Even I have to sell trash, you will graduate if that’s what you want to do”. I decided to do nursing because the last thing I wanted is to go to med school, hang halfway, with no financial support.

Guess what? The same person kept telling me that I won’t make it, “oh you think you’re smart , I fail a class in nursing school, I think you will fail the first semester”. Still unbothered

And you know what I did? I wrote my story; why I left Haiti to come here, why was it important to complete that degree for myself as well as my parents. I knew English was my third language, I knew that I had to study 3X harder than other students, so I was determined to complete everything I had in mind.   Fast forward; I graduated with my Bachelor in Nursing and I have been a nurse for 2 years so far.  I am now in a much better position to help my siblings, launch my own business and now ready to launch my own ‘Dedication Life Planner’ in just a couple days. Spoiler alert*** (I am super duper excited about these planners🥁🤸‍♀️🎶💃🏾😎)

I have so many things in my poster board to accomplish and I am so ready for GROWTH.

I am here to tell you that you can either shape your current story or decide to write a new narrative if you don’t have one. There are a few things I can suggest you do that will help you with your vision and give you a sense of purpose. Ask yourself these questions

  1. What do I dare to dream of doing?
  2. Is there something that is stopping me accomplishing that dream? If so, can someone help me find my purpose? Then find a mentor/coach

Once you done asking yourself these questions,  you need to start taking action and eliminating anything that’s draining you and stopping  you to be your best. Here’s what you can do.

  1. Stop saying yes to everything because if you want to step into your profound potential, you must you leave some unnecessary stuff behind
  2. Here’s how you can start saying NO. (My diary is full, I’m afraid I can’t,  sorry I have to pass or that won’t work for me).
  3. What did you promise yourself you would do but you now feeling overwhelmed? Start prioritizing and do things everyday that is getting you closer to your dream. Sometimes, crossing things off your list will give you more energy to spend on what’s important.
  4. Start imagining what success looks like. What would the other side feel like?  What would success feel like?

Don’t let doubt stop you. I know it can be difficult to envision a better life when everything is going left in your life, but compose your story anyway. You have the potential!

What do you want to see a week, month ,two or six years from now? If it’s something that is keeping you up at night; craft your vision and start acting on it. I am sure you will be smiling when you are reviewing your goals a year from now.
